Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has heaped praise on Ralf Rangnick, describing the Austrian tactician as a “legend” ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Austria.

The two sides are set to face off on March 27, 2026, at the Ernst Happel Stadion, in what promises to be a crucial preparatory fixture ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 5pm

Speaking in the build-up to the encounter, Addo reflected on his long-standing admiration for Rangnick, revealing that their connection dates back to his early playing days in Germany.

“He wanted me as a player to come to Stuttgart. That was the first time we had contact,” Addo revealed, referencing his time in the Bundesliga with clubs like Hannover 96 and Borussia Dortmund.

Addo went on to highlight Rangnick’s profound influence on modern football, particularly in Germany, where he is widely credited for revolutionizing tactical systems and player development.

“In Germany, he is someone who understands the game so well. He was responsible for introducing new tactical ideas like the four-man defensive line, and he has built a very big name over the years,” Addo said.

Rangnick’s rise through the ranks ;  from the lower divisions to the Bundesliga with clubs such as RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim has cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most influential football minds.

“And yes, he is a very renowned coach, a very good coach. I have a lot of respect for him,” Addo added.

Friday’s clash will mark only the second meeting between Ghana and Austria at senior level. Their previous encounter ended in a 1-1 draw in an international friendly back in 2007.

For Ghana, the match represents more than just a reunion with a respected figure in European football. It is a key test of readiness as the Black Stars continue fine-tuning their squad and tactical identity ahead of the World Cup.

With both teams eager to assess their progress, the fixture in Vienna is expected to offer valuable insights  and perhaps a glimpse into how Addo’s side measures up against one of Europe’s most tactically disciplined teams.
