Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan will be officially unveiled as an ambassador for Ghana Football by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in Accra.

The ceremony is aimed at honouring Gyan’s immense contribution to Ghana football while rallying support for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, this June.

In a statement, the GFA said the former captain will lead promotional campaigns, fan engagements, and corporate partnership initiatives designed to unite Ghanaians behind the national team before the tournament.

Gyan will also represent the GFA at official meetings and support the promotion of the national teams and Colts football.

Asamoah Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances for the Black Stars. He is Africa’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup with six goals. He featured in three FIFA World Cups: Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014.

The former Sunderland striker etched his name into history in 2006 when he scored Ghana’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal in a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic. Four years later, he played a key role in Ghana’s historic run to the quarterfinals in South Africa, scoring three goals during the tournament.

Although remembered for the dramatic penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 quarterfinals, Gyan’s leadership, influence, and dedication to the national team have continued to earn admiration across the football world.

The ambassadorial role is expected to strengthen fan engagement and boost national support as Ghana prepares for another appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Asamoah Gyan, in an interview on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central on May 8, unveiled new initiatives under the Asamoah Gyan Foundation aimed at discovering and nurturing young football talent across Ghana.

The foundation is set to embark on a trip and, upon return, will officially launch a major initiative dubbed The Art of Goal Scoring.

He added that the foundation will also unveil its academy projects in partnership with collaborators, alongside a tournament scheduled to take place after the upcoming World Cup.

The initiative is expected to provide young footballers with structured training and development opportunities while helping to identify and nurture the next generation of Ghanaian football stars.
