Manchester United secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford to confirm a third-place Premier League finish in a chaotic contest filled with controversy, momentum swings, and late drama.
Luke Shaw opened the scoring early for United with his first goal since January 2023 after Forest failed to clear successive crosses into the area. The England full-back showed excellent technique to control the loose ball before firing a powerful finish into the bottom corner to give the hosts the perfect start.
Despite falling behind, Forest responded positively and created several dangerous moments through Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi, but United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced key saves to protect the lead before halftime.

Forest eventually found their equaliser shortly after the restart when Morato powered home from close range following a well-worked corner routine. The visitors were enjoying their best spell of the match and looked capable of turning the game around as United struggled to regain control.
However, the defining moment of the afternoon arrived in the 49th minute when Matheus Cunha restored Manchester United’s lead in highly controversial fashion.
Bryan Mbeumo appeared to handle the ball in the build-up before it fell to Cunha, whose strike beat Matz Sels. VAR advised referee Michael Salisbury to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, but the official stunned Forest players and supporters by allowing the goal to stand, ruling the handball accidental.

The decision sparked furious reactions from the Forest bench and travelling supporters, with debate immediately erupting around the interpretation of the handball law.
United capitalised on the momentum and extended their advantage in the 75th minute through Bryan Mbeumo after another brilliant contribution from Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder delivered a low cross across goal for Mbeumo to finish, while also registering his 20th Premier League assist of the season — equalling the single-season record jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
Forest refused to surrender and immediately pulled a goal back through Morgan Gibbs-White, whose instinctive finish from Elliot Anderson’s cross ensured a tense finale.
The closing minutes turned into an end-to-end battle, with Diogo Dalot striking the post for United while Sels produced a remarkable late save to deny Joshua Zirkzee from close range.

Manchester United ultimately held on to secure all three points and guarantee a third-place finish in the league standings, while Nottingham Forest remain 16th despite a spirited performance that was overshadowed by the controversial second United goal.
The match also marked an emotional afternoon for veteran midfielder Casemiro, who received a standing ovation when substituted late in the second half after another influential display in midfield.

For Forest, frustration centred heavily around the VAR controversy, with many believing the Cunha goal should have been disallowed for handball. Yet despite the disappointment, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side showed resilience and attacking quality throughout an entertaining encounter at Old Trafford.
