Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams

Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams says the government has made financial provisions to support Ghanaian athletes participating in upcoming international competitions as part of efforts to improve preparation and athlete welfare.

He made the remarks during a media briefing following the conclusion of the 24th CAA African Athletics Championships held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Adams revealed that funding had already been secured for the recently concluded athletics competition, insisting that preparations had been made for both current and future international events involving Ghanaian athletes.

“Why no provision for others, I will tell you that provisions has been made,” he said.

“Indeed, Government provided 40 million at the just ended 24th CAA games and that money has been released to us to make whatever payment that we (Sports Ministry and Ghana Athletics) is supposed to make.”

Ghana Athletics President, Bawa Fuseini

The Sports Minister also disclosed that funding allocations had been made for several upcoming international competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“Provision has been made for the Commonwealth Games, provision has also been made for the Youth Olympics, indeed provisions has been made for many other international competitions like some single sport competitions,” Adams added.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

Adams’ comments come amid increasing public scrutiny over sports funding and athlete support in Ghana, particularly following recent discussions surrounding infrastructure, athlete welfare and preparations for major competitions.
