“Benjamin Asare is better than any goalkeeper anywhere” -Amarkai Amarteifio

Benjamin Asare in action for the Black stars

Former Sports Minister and current Great Olympics board chairman Amarkai Amarteifio has made a bold claim about Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, insisting he is the best goalkeeper available to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Amarteifio expressed strong confidence in Asare’s abilities during an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, where he praised the shot-stopper’s quality and suggested he stands above all other Ghanaian goalkeepers, including those playing abroad.

“We have a goalkeeper now who is better than any goalkeeper anywhere. All the goalkeepers we have abroad, none is better than Ben Azari, in my humble opinion,” he said.

His comments come at a time when Ghana are intensifying preparations for the World Cup, with the team set to continue their build-up through a series of friendly matches before the tournament begins.

However, Asare has also come under scrutiny following a costly mistake in Ghana’s recent 2–0 defeat to Mexico in a pre-World Cup friendly played at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc on May 23, 2026.

The Black Stars goalkeeper was punished early in the match after a distribution error just two minutes into the game, directly leading to Mexico’s opening goal. The mistake contributed to a difficult outing for Ghana as they struggled to recover against a strong Mexican side.

Despite the setback, Amarteifio’s backing highlights ongoing debate around Ghana’s goalkeeping department as the national team finalises its preparations for the global tournament.

Ghana are expected to play another friendly against Wales on June 2, with the final World Cup squad set to be announced on June 1.

With just over two weeks remaining before the tournament, competition for places in the Black Stars squad remains intense, and performances in the remaining friendlies are likely to play a key role in selection decisions.

As the World Cup approaches, attention will continue to focus on whether Asare can silence his critics and justify the strong public endorsement from one of Ghana football’s most prominent figures.
