Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare says he will fully support whichever goalkeeper is chosen as the team’s number one as the team steps up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the upcoming friendly against Wales.

Speaking to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) media during a training session in Cardiff, Asare stressed that competition for the starting role should not affect unity within the goalkeeping group.

“As goalkeepers, we trust each other. It does not matter who starts, we will support whoever is selected because we are united by one goal, victory,” he said.

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz named five goalkeepers in his 28-man provisional squad for the pre-World Cup training camp in Wales;

  • Lawrence Ati-Zigi (St. Gallen)
  • Benjamin Asare (Hearts of Oak)
  • Joseph Anang (St. Patrick’s)
  • Paul Reverson (Ajax)
  • Solomon Agbasi (Hearts of Oak)

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper also pointed to the importance of discipline under the Black Stars’ new goalkeeping trainer, urging players to stay mentally strong and follow instructions closely.

“As a player, you need a strong mentality. You must follow every instruction from the new goalkeeping trainer so he can build confidence in you as a goalkeeper,” he stated.

Benjamin Asare added that players develop differently and that performances in training do not always tell the full story.

“I believe in everyone, and I also believe in myself because we all have different qualities. Some players may not perform well in training, but they deliver during matches,” he noted.

He further called for unity regardless of selection decisions, saying players must remain focused on the team’s success.

“If the coach chooses another goalkeeper, it does not mean that because I am the number one, I should be upset. We have to remain prayerful and united for the success of the team,” he added.

Asare also appealed to supporters to maintain their backing for the team throughout the campaign. The Black Stars are preparing to face Wales in an international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
