Sandro Tonali has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi was the driving force behind his club-record move from Newcastle United, admitting the Italian manager played a decisive role in convincing him to join the North London club.

Tottenham have reached an agreement with Newcastle to sign the Italy international in a deal worth up to £100 million, making Tonali the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

The transfer is understood to include an initial fee of £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons. The 26-year-old is expected to undergo a medical in London before completing the move and signing a six-year contract worth more than £275,000 per week.

Speaking after the transfer was agreed, Tonali admitted De Zerbi’s influence was one of the biggest reasons behind his decision to leave St James’ Park.

“For sure Roberto De Zerbi has been crucial for me to join Spurs. He played a big role,” Tonali said.

“I can’t wait to work with him.”

Tonali also dismissed suggestions that there were deeper reasons behind his departure from Newcastle, insisting he simply felt it was the right time to embrace a fresh challenge.

“It’s simple, we decided for a change and we are ready for this new adventure,” he added.

The Italian midfielder leaves Newcastle after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top central midfielders and now arrives at Tottenham as the marquee signing of De Zerbi’s new era.

Spurs will hope Tonali’s arrival provides the creativity, composure and defensive steel needed to strengthen their midfield as they prepare for the new season, with the Italian expected to become a central figure in De Zerbi’s plans.
