Spain have won the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup for the second time after beating defending champions DPR Korea 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw after 120 minutes in Lodz, Poland on Sunday, September 27.
Goalkeeper Laia López was Spain’s hero, saving penalties from Choe Yon A and Pak Il Sim to secure the title. Neither side could find a breakthrough in regulation time or extra time, although Spain created the better chances and finished with 22 shots to DPR Korea’s nine.
Alba Cerrato twice came close to scoring for Spain, while Rosalía Domínguez also forced a save from the DPR Korea goalkeeper. Laia López made an important stop shortly before half-time to keep Spain from falling behind.
The victory gives Spain their second U-20 Women’s World Cup title, following their 2022 triumph in Costa Rica. It also avenges their penalty shootout defeat to DPR Korea in the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final. DPR Korea had entered the final as defending champions after winning the 2024 edition.
