Lawyer for former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Jerry Avenorgbor, has denied reports that his client is under investigation by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
Speaking exclusively on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Avenorgbor said Ampofo Ankrah is instead being investigated by the Economic Crime Unit at Ghana Police Service Headquarters over his alleged involvement in the visa scandal surrounding the NSA.
The investigation relates to alleged payments totalling $600,000 to facilitate visas for individuals linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Avenorgbor, however, denied any involvement by his client in the alleged scheme and said Ampofo Ankrah has fully cooperated with the investigation.

“The matter as we speak is at the Police headquarters, the Economic Crime Unit and they’ve been investigating for weeks now. They’ve invited a lot of parties.”

“It’s at the Police headquarters so I don’t know this BNI thing that somebody is talking about. It is under investigation, deep investigations; we’ve been there several times.”

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah was asked to step aside from his role as Director-General of the NSA by Ghana Presidet John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, October 1, 2026. (Click highlighted text to read full story)
