The Referees Association of Ghana (RAG) has suspended 74 of its members whose names came up in the recent investigative film by the journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The Association in a statement indicated that while a final determination is yet to be taken by its Disciplinary Committee against the 74 persons, it has issued a provisional suspension.
[contextly_sidebar id=”i6lu3UpIYEjJIcaMnNSEnhrc5Nt5vdNI”]The referees, who include FIFA referees, Assistant FIFA referees, Premier League referees and retired referees, were caught among other offenses taking bribes to influence the outcome of football matches.
In the film titled Number 12, which was premiered throughout the country some months ago, some of the referees were captured boasting about their credentials in showing players undeserved red cards.
Some of the referees who have been suspended include; FIFA referees Issaka Afful and Reginald Lathbridge.
The retired referees who have also been suspended include; Leanier Addy and Charles Dowuona.
Referee Samuel Sukah, who awarded a controversial penalty opportunity to Accra Hearts of Oak in 2017 in their game against arch-rivals Kumasi Asante Kotoko that became a top subject for major sports discussions has also been suspended after the Anas’ video showed that he had taken a bribe to ensure victory for Accra Hearts of Oak.
