It was generally a good weekend for Ghanaian athletes abroad with Season’s best for some and an outdoor season debut for others.
At the Georgia HS Meet of Champions, former Middle Tennessee State University student, Agnes Abu improved her Season’s Best record to 2:01.86 seconds to finish first in her race.
It’s the 3rd 800m race of the season for the 27 year old , who has shown great progression having opened the season in 800m on 06 April at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn with a time of 2:07.5 seconds. She followed that up later with an improved 2:06.67 second showing at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville a week later.
Abu was not the only Ghanaian at the Meet of Champions as Alex Amankwah also opened his US outdoor season at the same event, finishing 9th in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:48.07 seconds.
The 2016 Olympian competed at the Grande Prêmio Brasil Caixa de Atletismo, Bragança Paulista on 28th April but did not finish (DNS) his 800m race.
Emmanuel Dasor got his 2019 season off to a good start at the Great Lakes Final Qualifying Meet, Delaware, Ohio competing in both the 100m and 200m events.
The former TI AMASS student finished 1st in his 100m race in a time of 10.28sec with an illegal wind reading of +3.7m/s. The 200m was completed in an impressive 20.77sec, with the wind speed caught at +2.4m/s.
It’s fantastic relief to see Dasor back running, after he suffered a knee injury at the Rio 2016 Olympics which kept him on the sidelines for almost 2 years.
Sprinter Emmanuel Yeboah continues to inch ever closer to qualifying for the World Athletics Championships with another impressive out at the NJCAA Division I Championships in Hobbs, New Mexico.
T-20, as he’s popularly known, raced to first position in 10.06s (wind +3.5m/s) in the qualifiers before running 10.19s (wind+2.3m/s) in the finals.
It’s the second time this season the the 22 year old old has dipped below 10.10s, having also run 10.06sec (wind +3.6m/s) at the Jackson Twilight Meet on 25 April, albeit both have been with illegal wind readings.
With the IAAF 100m qualification standard standard standing at 10.03s, the Western Texas College Sophomore is on track to just about make the time if he stays fit and consistent.
Multi-event athlete, Regina Yeboah, competed in 3 events at the NJCAA Division I Championships in Hobbs, New Mexico and completed a clean sweep of 1st places.
She won gold in the women’s high jump at the NJCAA Division 1 Outdoors with a jump of 1.68m, having cleared 1.70m in the qualifiers. She also finished first in the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.52s (wind +3.5m/s). She then finished first in the 800m as well with a time of 2:26.39 seconds.
