Jordan Ayew is not selfish – Andre Ayew

Captain of the Black Stars, Andre Ayew, has defended brother Jordan Ayew, amidst criticism of the Crystal Palace striker as being selfish.

Jordan, while brilliant against South Africa in the 2-0 win in the AFCON 2021 qualifier at Cape Coast, at times frustrated fans with his decision making, often choosing to go solo when the best option appeared to be to pass to a teammate.

And not for the first time, fans were quick to label the 28 year old as selfish but Andre believes the only way Jordan will continue to score goals is if he continues to take initiative.

“He’s a striker. We demand a lot from him. He has to try, make mistakes and try again. That’s the only way he will score. We can’t stop a striker from shooting.

“If some of his decisions are wrong, we will tell him, but at the end of the day, we need players who will take initiatives.

“If we want to score goals, we need to take initiatives; sometimes maybe it’s too much but we need to make the mistakes.

“I’m sure he will watch the game again and the coach too will watch the game and I’m sure all mistakes will be corrected.

Ghana arrived in Accra on Friday morning and will fly out to Sao Tome and Principe later on same day ahead of their second group game on Monday.

Goals from Thomas Partey and debutant Kudus Mohammed in either half gave Kwesi Appiah’s men a 2-0 win over South Africa to get their AFCON 2021 qualifying series off to a perfect start.

FIFA then issued an apology while reaffirming its "full support" for Infantino. In a statement, the leadership acknowledged "that errors were also made after the proposal was leaked to media". (Photo by Abdelmajid BZIOUAT / AFP via Getty Images)
