Jose Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford did not end as planned as Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.

The Portuguese manager was at Man United’s home ground for the first time as a manager since he was sacked as Red Devils boss in December 2018.

The game got off to a frenetic start with the home side taking the lead after just six minutes through Marcus Rashford’s strike.

Jesse Lingard dispossessed Davinson Sanchez in a dangerous area, the ball falling to Rashford who beat Paulo Gazzaniga at the near post.

And moments later, Mourinho inadvertently found himself in the thick of the action when a flying challenge from Harry Winks led to Mourinho taking a knock.

Winks clattered into Man United winger Daniel James, who could not help but crash straight into Mourinho. The Spurs boss was briefly limping on his right leg but James was in a worse state, needing attention from the club’s physio for some moments before being allowed to continue.Spurs hit back shortly before half-time through the man of the moment Dele Alli’s well-taken strike but it was not enough as Manchester United scored a second half penalty to win the match.
