Ashantigold deny reports that 4 of their players have tested positive for COVID-19

The medical head of Ashantigold Soccer Club, Dr George Chidi, has denied claims that four players in the team have tested positive for Coronavirus.

Prior to the club representing Ghana on the African continent in the CAF Confederations Cup, the club is expected to test the team for COVID-19.

Dr George Chidi stated that the club has not tested its players yet and claims of positive cases are false.

“That’s not true, because we have not started testing them of COVID-19, we are yet to start the COVID test, all things being equal on Saturday we should start,” he told Oyerepa FM.

“It’s no big deal anyone testing positive but we are yet to do the COVID-19 test, KCCR is ready to come to pick the samples but we are trying to put our logistics together. We need to put in place the protocols,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Premier League side says it will begin testing players and staff from Friday, August 7, 2020.

In a statement published on its website, the club indicated that the testing has been scheduled to take place in a space of three days.

The testing is in anticipation of the resumption of the Ghana Premier league October.

The testing will be done by the club’s medical team in collaboration with the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research and Tropical medicine (KCCR).

Find below the full statement from the Club:

The club’s screening exercise is scheduled to take place this week; results will only be known after players and officials have been tested. All contrary publications should, therefore, be disregarded and treated with the contempt it deserves.

The playing body is scheduled for a screening exercise on Friday, August 7. Whiles the entire backroom staff would undergo testing on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

This decision is necessitated by Management’s objective to prepare the team for a possible resumption of football activities in Ghana.

The screening exercise would be conducted by our medical team with the support of the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research and Tropical Medicine (KCCR).

The club successfully went through FIFA’s Pre-Competition Medical Assessment (PCMA) last month. It is therefore expected that these medical assessment procedures will inform Management’s decision and prepare the team ahead of the new season.
