Former world champion Richard Commey has congratulated Ghanaian boxer, Samuel Takyi, on winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Commey, who held the IBF lightweight title from February to December 2019 returned to the ring earlier this year after a 14-month hiatus in stunning fashion, knocking out Jackson Marinez.

Tweeting after Takyi was finally presented with his medal, Commey said the whole nation was proud of the amateur boxer for “raising the flag of Ghana high”

“We are all so proud of you, well done in raising the flag of Ghana high,” he tweeted.

Takyi has become the toast of Ghanaians after his success at the Olympics.

Despite losing his semi-final bout in the featherweight division against American, Duke Ragan comes away from Tokyo with the bronze medal.

He had already been guaranteed a medal after his quarter-final victory over Colombian,  David Avila Ceiber.

With semifinalists in boxing guaranteed at least a bronze medal, Takyi has become the toast of the nation, with many Ghanaians overjoyed at his success.

The medal is Ghana’s first at the Games since the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the first individual medal since Prince Amartey also won bronze in boxing, in Munich 1972.
