‘Select quality players for Black Stars no matter where they play’ – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has urged the handlers of the Black Stars to ensure that the best available players are selected for the national team.

Gyan insisted that despite arguments against players in lower leagues across Europe or the Middle East being called up, it was important for talented footballers who can contribute significantly to the Black Stars’ success to be brought into the squad.

Speaking on Accra-based radio station, Asaase FM on Tuesday, argued that a player might still contribute a great deal to Ghana’s success regardless of the fact that they play in leagues considered to be inferior.

“It’s something that happens everywhere all over the world. We’ve had a few good players who come in, including even our current head coach Otto Addo when he was playing, and serve their country well,” he said.

“I think sometimes we should forget about where they play. When you feel a player is good, and he can help the national team, why not?”

There was some derision from certain parts of the Ghanaian football fanbase prior to the selection of players like Swindon Town goalkeeper, Joseph Wollacott and St Pauli midfielder, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh to the Black Stars.

Even some people have questioned the continued inclusion of captain Andre Ayew in the side since his move to Qatari side, Al-Sadd.

The former pair have become established players in Ghana’s first team while Andre Ayew remains an important figure for the Stars.
