Autonomous Ghana Premier League to roll out in 23/24 after Executive Council’s approval

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has revealed that it will roll out its plans for an autonomous league from the 2023/24 season.

Plans for the autonomous league were initially expected to go ahead in the 2022/23 season but were pushed back a year after a meeting between the GPL clubs and the Autonomous Premier League Advisory Committee chaired by Togbe Afede.

This, according to the GFA is to allow enough time for engagement with the various stakeholders and education on the various changes that are expected.

The Ghana Premier League is currently organised and managed by the GFA.

The 2022-23 Ghana Premier League will be the qualifying competition for the autonomous Ghana Premier League managed by a separate company outside the GFA, jointly owned by the clubs, with the GFA owning a special share.

The league going autonomous will mean that the GFA will only handle the registration of players and officials and Disciplinary issues as required by FIFA.

The GFA added that there will be greater involvement from the clubs in the management of the 2022/23 league season.
