Son of Ghanaian parents, Yunus Musah, named in USA World Cup squad

19-year-old midfielder, Yunus Musah, has been officially named in the United States of America’s (USA) 2022 FIFA World Cup squad named by head coach Gregg Berhalter.

Musah, who is the son of Ghanaian parents, made the list after breaking through the starting unit of Spanish league side Valencia last season and featuring consistently this season.

He has featured as a starter in nine of 10 league games for Valencia operating as a central midfielder for the most part in the 2022-2023 campaign and has two assists.

Musah is one of seven midfielders called to the squad and the unit is led by Juventus’ Weston McKinnie and Leeds United duo Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson.

Prior to committing to play international football to USA, Musah was eligible to play for Italy, Ghana and England.

He was born in New York but grew up in Italy and England and he represented England at the Under 16 and Under 18 levels.

Team USA’s World Cup squad is headlined by Chelsea FC winger/forward Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna of Borussia Dortmund.

Lille’s Tim Weah, son of Liberian President and African football legend, George Weah, was named in the squad.

Defenders: Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic), Sergino Dest (AC Milan), Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls), Shaq Moore (Nashville), Tim Ream (Fulham), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Joe Scally (Borussia Monchengladbach), DeAndre Yedlin (Miami), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville)

Midfielders: Brenden Aaronson (Leeds), Kellyn Acosta (Los Angeles), Tyler Adams (Leeds), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Yunus Musah (Valencia), Cristian Roldan (Seattle)

Forwards: Jesus Ferreira (Dallas), Jordan Morris (Seattle), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Josh Sargent (Norwich), Tim Weah (Lille), Haji Wright (Antalyspor)
