Israeli trainer Avram Grant has been appointed as the head coach of Zambia’s National Football Men’s Team.

The former Chelsea and West Ham manager replaces Moses Sichone who took up the position as the head technical man of the Chipolopolo earlier this year following the sacking of Croat, Aljosa Asanovic.

Sichone is a former Zambia international who played for FC Cologne in the Bundesliga from 1999 to 2004 and served as a caretaker manager of Zambia’s men’s national football team.

Avram Grant has over 20 years of head coaching experience mainly with football clubs but has a fair level of national team coaching experience.

Grant served as Isreal head coach from 2002 to 2006 and served in the same role with Ghana’s Black Stars from 2014 to 2017.

He led Ghana to the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) but ended up with a silver medal after the Black Stars lost on penalties to Ivory Coast.

67 year old Grant, led the Black Stars to a fourth place finish at the 2017 AFCON and resigned shortly after the competition.

He will reportedly earn $25,000 per month as salary and is expected to improve the performance of the 2012 AFCON winners.

Zambia has failed to qualify to compete in four AFCON editions in a row; it’s last appearance in the tournament was a group stage appearance at the 2015 edition.
