Qatar 2022: Forget revenge, stick to the game plan – Gyan advises Black Stars ahead of Uruguay clash

Ghana must not go into their final group game against Uruguay in the ongoing FIFA World Cup with a revenge mindset, according to former captain, Asamoah Gyan.

Ghana suffered a heartbreaking quarterfinal penalty shootout loss to Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, in which Gyan missed an injury time penalty, after Uruguay’s Luis Suarez had handled the ball on the line.

That incident has haunted Ghanaian football fans for the past 12 years, and Friday’s final group game against Uruguay provides and opportunity for revenge.

But Gyan has urged the Black Stars playing body to be in control over their emotions and not approach the game with revenge on their minds.

“I don’t think going in for revenge will help. I think the Black Stars must stick to their game plan, and listen to the instructions from the technical team.

“Definitely, as humans some may have revenge at the back of their minds, but it should not get into the heads of the players,” he said.

A win for Ghana will guarantee passage through to the round of 16, while a draw may be enough, provided Portugal avoid defeat against South Korea in the other group game.
