FA Cup: Brendan Rodgers shades Amartey for role in defeat

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has criticised his players for their mistakes in the 2-1 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup.

Black Stars defender Daniel Amartey had a miserable outing on the night as he gave away the ball leading to the first goal, and his inability to clear his lines led to the second goal for the Championship side.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers was critical of his defence, stating the following:

“You’re playing at home, with a chance to get to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and we didn’t take it. I think it says everything that Daniel Iversen was the Man of the Match. We couldn’t keep the ball for one and then we didn’t defend well enough. For the first goal, we gave it away so cheaply. It’s just decision-making and then they end up going one up. For the second goal also, we gave the ball away and then we failed to defend it.”

The former Liverpool boss conceded the defeat was of their own making and was another chapter in a disappointing season:

“When you do that consistently in the game and you keep giving the ball to the opposition, then they can punish you and that’s what happened. We weren’t good enough on the evening but congratulations to Blackburn. It’s just not good enough, we have to accept that. It’s been very inconsistent over the course of the season. We’ve had some great performances here but the best team won.”

He then urged the team to look forward as there are key games ahead:

“We always analyse the games and see where we went wrong but I think after that we’ve got to draw a line under it. There’s massive games left in the league, starting on Saturday.”

Leicester City find themselves 14th on the league log with just 7 wins in 24 games. Their Premier League campaign will continue with a trip to bottom-side Southampton.
