“Last year’s exit from WAFU, a learning curve” – Joe Adarkwa of Ampem Darkoa Ladies

Ampem Darkoa Ladies Head Coach, Joe Nana Adarkwa has expressed the team’s readiness to rewrite the narrative of last season’s collapse at the WAFU Zone B qualification series.

Ampem Darkoa were crowned champions of the 2022/23 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League for the second time in a row after beating rivals Hasaacas Ladies 5-3 on penalties at the Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.

Doris Boaduwaa opened the scoring for Yusif Basigi’s side in the 61st minute before Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah equalized for the Techiman based-side with a late strike.

An additional 30 minutes of extra time was not enough to separate both sides, with the game travelling to penalties, ending in favour of the Techiman based side.

The two-time premier league Champions will now compete in the WAFU Zone B competition to book a ticket for the Women’s CAF Champions League.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Joe Nana Adarkwa stated that losing to Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria in the final last term thought them valuable lessons.

“Last year was our first time, and we have learnt a lot from what happened over there with Bayelsa Queens.”

“Playing the final against Hasaacas Ladies, we now know that we have to beef up the squad, so we are working on certain players and I am confident we will get them.”

“We will go with a good squad, so we can play and get to the  tournament proper, that is the CAF Women’s champions league.”

“With this same crop of players, we can’t do anything over there, although we have quality amongst them, but we are going to do add-ons to the squad.”

Ghana had no representative at the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League following Ampem Darkoa Ladies’ defeat to Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria in the finals of WAFU Zone B Champions League qualifiers at Stade Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

The Nigerian champions inflicted a 3-0 painful defeat on Ampem Darkoa Ladies to book themselves a slot in the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League to represent their country for the first time.
