PL: Sterling gets standing ovation from Todd Boehly during Chelsea’s win over Luton

Chelsea recorded their first home victory in 171 days after beating Luton 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had been without a victory on home turf since a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on March 7, a clash that saw Graham Potter still in charge of the club.

Raheem Sterling was the man to thank as a stunning double was enough to send them on the way to victory, leading to a standing ovation from Todd Boehly.

The England international’s first goal was a thing of beauty, with the forward picking up the ball on the right-hand side of the penalty before taking on four Luton defenders and slotting home.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s coverage, Scott Minto said: “What wonderful skill, ability, pace, composure and finishing from Raheem Sterling.

“That’s what we’ve been wanting to see from this time last season.

“It wasn’t good for him last season but already he’s started brilliantly – he’s cut inside two, he’s cut inside another and he’s just slotted it into the far post.

“It’s just brilliant play. Three, four Luton players around him but not wanting to get near him for fear of giving away a penalty.

“Don’t allow him to come inside, but once he’s inside it’s so difficult to stop him with pace.

“It was a wonderful goal, a wonderful finish and Luton’s worst nightmare. It’s just what Chelsea, the fans and Pochettino will have wanted.”

He then doubled the Blues’ lead midway through the second half as he swept home from inside the area after some fine work by Malo Gusto.

Sterling then turned provider as he broke free down the right flank before fizzing a cross in towards Nicolas Jackson who slotted home for his first competitive goal since joining from Villarreal for a fee of £32million.

As well as being Mauricio Pochettino’s first victory since taking charge of Chelsea this summer, it’s also seen a big boost in terms of the club’s league position.

The win sends the Blues up to eighth in the table for the time being at least – the first time that they’ll have been in the top half of the table since March.
