Inaki Williams (19) joins teammates to celebrate goal against CAR

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has thrown his weight behind forward Inaki Williams who has come under intense pressure for his inability to score Ghana.

Williams committed to play international football for Ghana in 2022 after heavily leaning towards playing for Spain in prior years.

Inaki and younger brother Nico were born to Ghanaian parents in Spain; Nico on the other hand, plays for Spain’s National Men’s Football Team.

Speaking after Ghana’s 2-1 win over Central African Republic that sealed the Black Stars place at the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire, Hughton was supportive of the under fire Athletic Bilbao forward.

“He is here because he wants to be here. He is a top player. He’s found it difficult to get the goals here and sometime it might take a very lucky goal for him to score that gets him off the mark and things change but with Number 9’s its not always about scoring goals, it’s about what they are prepared to give.

I am quite sure at some stage it (the goals) will come for him.”

The 29 year old has a goal and an assist in four La Liga games this season but is yet to score for Ghana after nine appearances.

He played 69 minutes in the game against CAR and Antoine Semenyo replaced him and went on to assist Ernest Nuamah’s goal in the 88th minute.
