The playing surface of the football pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium is bound to be in a horrible state after a viral video of the grass getting shredded surfaced online.
A biker was spotted in the video pulling off “doughnuts” on the grass and ripping the surface up in the process with bits of grass flying around.
The scene has brought up the touchy issue of maintenance culture in Ghana since the country has a poor record with the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi all but rundown.
The stadium has been leased out for music concerts and Christian themed events in the latter part of December as the National Sports Authority (NSA) looks to cash in on the Christmas festivities.
The NSA manages the Accra Sports Stadium and other national sports edifices including the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Cape Coast Stadium in Cape Coast.
Leasing out the Accra Stadium has forced football clubs competing in the Ghana Premier League to play their games away from the Stadium.
