Little Girona’s chances of ‘doing a Leicester’ in LaLiga looked a little more credible on Sunday night at the Olympic Stadium after they put four past Xavi’s Barcelona to go back to the top of the league.
The Catalan minnows had never beaten Barcelona in six previous league games but they fully deserved victory with coach Michel, taking charge of his 100th game in the top flight, out-thinking Xavi across the 90 minutes.
“It’s seven points now,’ said Frenkie de Jong of the gap that has opened up between Girona and Barcelona. ‘We were not good enough tonight but we still have more than half the season to go.’
It’s true that Barça will have plenty of time to make up ground and Girona will have plenty of time to slip, but on this form they don’t look like doing that.
They outplayed Barcelona and fully deserved to leave with their first ever victory against the current La Liga champions.
They might not end up with the title – but after 16 games played no one can argue they have turned into the team everyone else has to stop
