Black Starlets celebrate goal against Cote D'Ivoire

A handful of Ghanaian sprinters have expressed their displeasure over the mishandling of the state of the art, world class athletics track at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.

This displeasure was expressed after members of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Under 17 team-the Black Starlets- were captured celebrated a goal on the track with their spiked boots on.

The Starlets are competing in the WAFU Under 17 Zone B Championship taking place at the University of Ghana Stadium and beat Cote D’Ivoire 5-1 in the opening game of the competition.

Joseph Narbi scored twice with both coming in the first half for Ghana as the Starlets dominated Cote D’Ivoire in its latest attempt to qualify to the Under 17 World Cup for the first time since 2017.

However, while celebrating one of the goals, some Black Starlets players run on to the track that was laid before the start of the 2023 African Games drawing the ire of 2023 African Games 200 Metre Men’s Gold medalist Joseph Paul Amoah.

Other A-List Ghanaian sprinters including Isaac Botsio, Ibrahim Fuseini and Solomon Hammond sounded off on the incident.

Botsio, Amoah and Fuseini were part of Ghana’s 4×100 Men’s Relay Team that recently qualified to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games.

On his X (formerly Twitter) page, Joseph Paul Amoah wrote, “That’s our only certified track for Christ Sake” while Fuseini added on Instagram, “It’s about time we need to stop doing this. The only track we have in Ghana now.”
