Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has called for more education to Ghana’s football stakeholders.

He said this in an interview with Citi Sports on the sidelines of a commemorative event to mark the 23rd Anniversary of the May 9 Disaster.

Considered as one of the worst stadium disasters in African football history, 127 people died as a result of a stampede that occurred in a league game between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko in 2001.

The event was attended by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif and Secretary and Welfare Officer of the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster Trust Fund Christopher Annan.

After highlighting the steps taken to improve security issues at league games to prevent such an incident from repeating, the GFA President called for continued education. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

“There is a need for us to continue our educational drive educating our members on football and regulations of football. Even where match officials get key decisions wrong, there are clear processes or procedure for every member to go through in seeking redress. It is not acceptable for individuals to take the law into their own hands.”

The GFA recently had the Court of Arbitration for Sport uphold its disqualification of George Afriyie from running for the GFA Presidential seat at the 2023 GFA elections.
