Working to introduce VAR LITE to Ghana Premier League- Retired Referee Alex Kotey

Retired referee Alex Neequaye Kotey has stated that there are advanced plans to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Lite into the Ghana Premier League moving forward.

He indicated that this mechanism will be a stand-in for the standard VAR setup for the Ghana League due to financial challenges implementing the standard VAR system.

He said this on the sideline of the launch of the 2024 Ghana Football Awards that had West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus nominated as the Male Footballer of the Year.

The long serving match official however, made it clear that the VAR Lite setup has fewer cameras and could prove to be a challenge after relaying a positive outlook on officiating in the Ghana Premier League. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

“We are working assiduously on that-providing VAR-we have not let it go. FIFA is trying to introduce a less cost VAR which is the VAR Lite so when the VAR Lite comes, we will see how best we can bring it on because that one doesn’t need a lot of cameras.”

Retired referee Alex Kotey

“The only challenge there is that you don’t get some features in the VAR Lite as compared to the full VAR but of course it is just a stepping stone.”
