GPL: George Afriyie blames league’s credibility issues for sponsorship struggles

Former Ghana Football Association Vice President George Afriyie has stated that the Ghana Premier League’s lack of credibility is a major factor behind its struggle to attract headline sponsors.

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season began without a headline sponsor or a dedicated TV rights holder, a contrast to the 2023/24 season which had secured broadcast rights.

This season, the broadcast of league matches has been distributed across various TV stations in Ghana to boost visibility.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, George Afriyie, who previously served on CAF’s Marketing and TV Rights Committee, emphasized that the league’s current state does not appeal to corporate sponsors.

“The product simply isn’t attractive enough to draw in corporate investment,” he explained.

I mean for them and those in administration they think that they are doing very well but people like Mr. Kudjoe Fianoo have been around for so many years and knows how Ghana football has been run over the years and that if Mr Fianoo says Kurt Okraku has failed, that’s a fact.

First of all, they should take their hands off the running of the Premier League.

The Premier League and the Division 1 League is too much being manipulated.

There are too many manipulations.

Week 8 of the league will continue today with Legon Cities facing Accra Lions at the Legon Stadium.

On Sunday, Accra Hearts of Oak will go head-to-head with Gold Stars, while Bechem United takes on Karela United.

Samartex will clash with Berekum Chelsea, Heart of Lions goes up against Nsoatreman, and Aduana FC hosts Medeama at the Nana Agyemang Badu Park. Young Apostles will face Dreams FC, Holy Stars play Asante Kotoko, and Nations FC will take on Vision FC.
