The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) organized a national wheelchair tennis camp at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court in honour of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Supported by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the camp brought together over 30 junior players, focusing on introducing wheelchair tennis to children aged 10 to 18 with physical disabilities and enhancing their skills in the sport.

National coaches Yahya Macaulay and Philip Plange led the training sessions, assisted by regional coaches. The program also served as an avenue to introduce the sport to new participants.

Henry Larbi, the GTF Wheelchair Tennis National Coordinator, highlighted the broader purpose of the initiative.

“This is about more than just playing tennis—we’re empowering young people to become leaders and role models,” he stated.

He noted that wheelchair tennis, which began in Ghana in 2013, is steadily expanding nationwide.

“We have a strategic plan to extend the sport to nearly every region in Ghana,” he explained. “Currently, we are active in the Western, Central, Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, Bono, and Ahafo Regions, as well as Tamale. This means about 70% of the country is covered. In the next year or two, we aim to develop a strong pool of junior players who can compete internationally.”
