Accra Lions decry declining State of Ghana Football, call for urgent reforms

Ghana Premier League side Accra Lions FC has expressed deep concern over the declining state of Ghanaian football, citing pressing challenges that endanger the sport’s future.

The club described the current situation as a pivotal moment, urging immediate reforms to restore professionalism, transparency, and sportsmanship within the domestic game.

According to Accra Lions, the Ghana Premier League is grappling with steadily worsening conditions, which they believe reflect broader issues affecting football in the country.

Lions voiced its frustration over the absence of a league sponsor and a television rights deal, arguing that these shortcomings are eroding the league’s credibility and diminishing its appeal.

In a statement, the club attributed the lack of sponsorship to questionable refereeing standards, cautioning that the current direction risks making the league unattractive to potential partners.

“We are playing our fourth season in Ghana’s top division, and unfortunately, we have to admit that the conditions are steadily deteriorating,” the statement read.

“There is now no sponsor for the league, nor has a television contract been negotiated at this point,” the club said, questioning how such glaring issues have been allowed to persist.

Accra Lions also criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for neglecting to address numerous “incidents and issues,” stating that this has “left us with more questions than answers.”

“How will the league ever acquire sponsors again if refereeing performances like yesterday’s become the standard and any criticism is immediately sanctioned by the association?”

Accra Lions asked, referencing what they see as a stifling culture of unaccountability.
