Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has endorsed the nomination of Kofi Iddie Adams as Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation.

He commended President John Dramani Mahama for appointing what he believes is the right person to lead the sector.

On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, President Mahama nominated Kofi Adams, Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, as Minister of Sports and Recreation.

The nomination was included in the third batch of ministerial appointments awaiting Parliamentary approval.

Kofi Adams is set to undergo vetting to officially assume the role, replacing Mustapha Ussif, who has served as Sports Minister since 2021 under the New Patriotic Party government led by Nana Akufo-Addo.

The 49-year-old nominee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, with a specialization in the Epidemiology of Parasitic Diseases.

If approved, Kofi Adams will become Ghana’s 28th Sports Minister since 1978. His tenure, however, begins with significant challenges, including addressing Ghana’s recent football setbacks.

These include failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years and missing out on the upcoming CHAN tournament scheduled for August.

His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has appointed a minister.

I believe strongly that in the wisdom of the President, he has selected somebody, he believes that he can do the job.

All we can do,  as a football person, or football people, or as a club ambassador, is offer my support.

Right away, I cannot be criticizing or be asking of what he can do or what he will bring up. No.

I cannot be talking of that. Honestly, from where he is coming from, I believe strongly that the president has done proper consultation, and he believes that this man can do the job.

Now, it’s no more just sports. It’s also Sports and Recreation, and so he might have done some deep soul-searching and arriving in that decision, so it is not about me to at least be judging him and be asking.

It’s too early for that.
