Provision of stipends for players in the GHPL under discussion – Kofi Adams

Minister of Sports and Recreation designate Kofi Adams has revealed that conversations are underway to provide financial assistance for individuals that play in Ghana’s Premier Football League Division.

Low wages remain just one of the many problems that burden the Ghana Premier League but has been identified as a major reason for player exodus and a lack of star quality in the league.

According to Kofi Adams keeping the best Ghanaian players in Ghana remains a focal point of discussion and making stipends available is an option.

“We talked about giving them allowances so we can retain a number of our players.

“Some of them leave the shores of this country to play in war-torn countries just because their earnings are so low.

“The whole idea is to retain players by giving them stipends.

“We think it will go a long way to improve the league.” he told the Appointment’s committee of parliament.

If confirmed, he will have the major responsibility of reviving a football industry currently in stupor both at the National and Club level while lesser funded sporting disciplines also compete for his attention.
