Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus has faced some of football’s biggest names, but one player stands above the rest in his eyes: Thiago Alcantara.
The West Ham United midfielder didn’t hesitate when asked about the toughest opponent he’s ever shared the pitch with, calling the former Bayern Munich and Liverpool maestro “too smooth” in an interview with Rising Ballers on February 25, 2025.

Kudus, known for his own flair and tenacity, couldn’t hide his admiration for Thiago’s effortless brilliance.
“He’s just different,” Kudus said.
“The way he moves, controls the ball, sees the game—it’s like he’s playing a different sport. Too smooth, man.”
It’s high praise from a 24-year-old who’s already dazzled at the 2022 World Cup and carved out a reputation as one of the Premier League’s rising stars.
The two likely crossed paths in 2023, when Kudus’ West Ham faced Thiago’s Liverpool in the Premier League or EFL Cup.
Thiago, then in his final season with the Reds before retiring in 2024, was still pulling strings with his trademark vision and silk-like touch, even as injuries slowed his campaign.
For Kudus, who thrives on physicality and quick bursts, Thiago’s cerebral, almost casual mastery clearly left a mark.
It’s not hard to see why.
Kudus, meanwhile, is no slouch himself.
His two-goal heroics against South Korea in Qatar 2022 had Ghanaian fans buzzing, and he’s since become a linchpin for West Ham. Yet, even with his own highlight reel growing, he’s tipping his hat to Thiago’s unmatched class.
As Kudus gears up for Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025, he’ll be chasing that same level of brilliance. For now, though, Thiago Alcantara holds the crown as the smoothest operator he’s ever faced—and that’s a compliment straight from the Black Stars’ own magician.
