The Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted an “error of judgement” in awarding Erling Haaland’s controversial winning goal in Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
Haaland struck in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, converting Josko Gvardiol’s cross at the back post to give City the lead.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, with Haaland appearing to have moved beyond United’s defensive line.
However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, with Haaland deemed to have been played onside by Patrick Dorgu’s boot.
The decision sparked debate because United midfielder Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position and appeared to be attempting to reach Gvardiol’s cross.
Although Fernandez did not make contact with the ball, questions were raised over whether his position and attempt to play the ball had interfered with the play.
Pro Ref has now acknowledged that the decision should have been reviewed by the referee on the pitch.
“It was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective,” Pro Ref said.
“However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.
“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place.”
The Premier League Match Centre had earlier defended the decision, saying VAR determined Haaland was in an onside position and that Fernandez, despite being offside, had not played the ball.
Gvardiol’s cross took a slight deflection off Dorgu’s boot before reaching Haaland, with the United striker appearing to benefit from the defender’s position.
But Fernandez’s attempt to reach the ball in the middle of the six-yard box became the main focus of the controversy.
United defender Lisandro Martinez described the decision as an “injustice”, while manager Michael Carrick said he was “confused” by the ruling.
The controversy added to a dramatic Manchester derby in which City played much of the match with ten men.
City midfielder Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute after kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes while he was on the ground.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, City held on for the victory, with Haaland’s goal ultimately deciding the match.
Pro Ref’s admission means the decision that determined the derby winner will now be subject to a formal review.
