Cote D’Ivoire couldn’t host U20 AFCON due to “unforeseen circumstances”- CAF

Africa’s football governing body, CAF, has stated that the reason behind Cote D’Ivoire’s inability to host the Men’s Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

CAF stated this via an official communication in the aftermath of the aforementioned West African nation’s inability to host the biannual competition.

Cote D’Ivoire was scheduled to host the tournament but withdrew from doing so exactly a month to the start of the tournament that has 13 nations competing.

The hosting rights to the tournament that runs from April 27 to May 18, have been handed to Egypt since the announcement of Cote D’Ivoire’s withdrawal was made.

“This is subsequent to CAF having been informed by… the Government of Cote D’Ivoire that due to unforeseen circumstances, they are unable to host the tournament” the statement read and added that

“The Egyptian Football Association and the Egyptian Government had previously submitted a bid to host the TotalEnergies CAF-Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025.”
