The Danny List Foundation has sponsored two junior chess players, Glenn Johnson Botwe and Alba Karina Quartey, to participate in the 2025 World Schools’ Chess Championship in Serbia.
The players had initially dropped out of Ghana’s team due to financial constraints, despite qualifying for the prestigious event. Thanks to the foundation’s intervention, Botwe and Quartey have now arrived in Serbia to compete.
In an interview with the media, Madam Angela List, Chairperson of the Danny List Foundation, explained that the sponsorship reflects the foundation’s commitment to promoting underfunded sports as a tool for youth development.
She highlighted chess as one of the major sports lacking funding in Ghana, underscoring the need for support.
“The Danny List Foundation has long supported sports development in Ghana, providing sponsorship and resources to talented young players while promoting the game in schools and communities nationwide, so I’m thrilled we could step in again,” she said.
Madam List wished the players success and encouraged them to strive for medals to make Ghana proud. Mr. Phil John Quartey, an Accra-based sports journalist and father of the beneficiaries, expressed deep gratitude to Madam Angela List and the foundation for their swift response.
He also thanked TT Brothers Ghana Limited and Experts Consult Limited for their additional sponsorship of the young chess players.
The Danny List Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has consistently provided opportunities for children and young adults to enhance their skills and foster a love for sports.
The World Schools’ Chess Championship, a prestigious international tournament, has drawn over 700 young players from 43 national federations this year, competing across various categories from U7 to U17, including separate open and girls’ events.
