Acting Registrar at the Ghana Psychology Council, Anna Plange, has bemoaned the lack of sports psychologists in Ghana.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, the veteran psychologist highlighted this issue as part of a broad concerning situation of a lack of psychologists in the country.

At a time where more pressure is heaped on athletes to perform consistently over long periods, Anna Plange, is advocating for more avenues to be opened to train more sports psychologists in Ghana.

“We don’t have the training in Ghana. Legon [University of Ghana] they don’t train sports psychologists, it’s not part of the program they have; UCC [University of Cape Coast] too so we don’t have any university that is training sports psychologists here. They do the program outside the country…and so sometimes, people might be interested but they don’t have the means to do it” she said and called for more people to be trained in Ghana

“We need to train and I’m sure there are people who will be interested in it. Every year the number of first degree holders that come out with psychology is in thousands but then going into the specialization, going into the Master’s [Degree] the admission can take just a few.”

Many in the sports sector attributed Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team’s poor form in recent years to the absence of a psychologist in the team. Kris Perquy has since been appointed as the Black Stars psychologist.
