Burnley clinched promotion back to the Premier League with a win that also sent Leeds United up and consigned Sheffield United to the Championship play-offs.

The Clarets extended their unbeaten run to 31 games with Josh Brownhill scoring twice, a victory that clinched a top-two place along with the Whites, who beat Stoke City earlier in the day.

For the Blades, a fourth defeat in five games means they will finish third and have to fight their way through the post-season if they are to claim the third promotion spot.

Scott Parker’s side have built their campaign on a remarkable defensive effort and the win means they have secured promotion by breaking a 104-year-old record for their longest unbeaten run.

Needing the win to return to the top flight at the first time of asking, Burnley made no mistake in front of a raucous crowd to spark celebrations at Turf Moor.

The Whites secured promotion with two games to spare after Sheffield United lost at second-placed Burnley, a result which meant the Clarets also confirmed their return to the top flight.

Daniel Farke’s men had crushed Stoke City 6-0 in their own game earlier on Monday to leave promotion a mere formality.

They will win the title with victories over Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle in their final two matches, barring a mathematical miracle goal difference swing from Burnley.

Farke, who had chosen not to make any further signings in the January transfer window, is now closing in on a third title at this level after winning two with Norwich.

A huge summer awaits as Leeds look to buck the worrying trend that appears set to see all of the past six teams promoted to the Premier League go straight back down.
