Tottenham Hotspur were left frustrated in North London as a sensational performance from Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos denied them victory in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

The Brazilian shot-stopper delivered a heroic display, pulling off a series of stunning saves to frustrate Ange Postecoglou’s side, who threw everything forward in search of a winner.

Hugo Ekitike gave Frankfurt a dream start in the 6th minute, lashing in a low strike to silence the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The French forward, linked with several Premier League clubs, showed exactly why with his clinical finish.

Spurs responded with urgency, and Pedro Porro brought the home side level with an audacious backheel flick ; a moment of brilliance that lifted the crowd and set the tone for a dominant second half.

Tottenham pushed relentlessly after the break, but fate – and Santos ; stood in their way. Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur both rattled the crossbar in quick succession, while Son Heung-min and James Maddison were denied by acrobatic saves.

The drama peaked in stoppage time when Micky van de Ven thought he’d stolen the win with a bouncing header, only for Santos to claw it away with a fingertip save that summed up his night.

With Spurs sitting 14th in the Premier League and already out of both domestic cups, the Europa League remains their only path to silverware this season. But they’ll need to find another level – and a way past Kaua Santos ; in the return leg if they hope to keep that dream alive.
