Benfica sealed top spot in Group C with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in sweltering 36°C heat at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Andreas Schjelderup scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute, finishing low after a smart assist from Fredrik Aursnes.

Despite Bayern already securing qualification, manager Vincent Kompany made seven changes but brought on Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, and Michael Olise at half-time to chase the game.

Kimmich had a goal ruled out for offside, and Bayern pushed hard in the second half, but Benfica keeper Anatoliy Trubin stood firm with key saves to deny Pavlovic and Leroy Sane.

Cooling breaks in both halves highlighted the brutal conditions, with Kompany admitting the heat affected the flow of the game.

Veteran Ángel Di María, who will return to Rosario Central after the tournament, played a key role in the winning goal and received a standing ovation from fans.

Benfica will face Group D’s runner-up; likely Chelsea in the last 16.
