New Zealand’s amateur side Auckland City earned a famous 1-1 draw against Boca Juniors in their final Club World Cup group game in Nashville; thanks to a goal from trainee teacher Christian Gray.
Despite shipping 16 goals in their opening two matches, Auckland defied the odds to claim their first point in the tournament since their 2014 semi-final run.
Boca took the lead in the first half through a bizarre sequence; Lautaro Di Lollo’s header cannoned off the post, struck goalkeeper Nathan Garrow, and trickled over the line for an own goal.

But Auckland responded after the break. In the 51st minute, Gray rose highest to meet Jerson Lagos’ corner and powered home a header to level the match; sparking wild celebrations among the part-timers.
Moments later, play was suspended for nearly 40 minutes due to a lightning storm, but when action resumed, Boca resumed their siege.

The result ends Auckland’s tournament on a high note, and serves as a reminder of their giant-killing spirit. For players juggling day jobs and football, including Gray who teaches in between matches; it was a moment that truly captured the magic of the Club World Cup
