With less than three weeks to the start of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, are facing a major funding crisis that could derail their participation.

Citi Sports can confirm, through anonymous sources, that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has informed the squad it cannot provide the necessary funds for their tournament preparations.

The situation worsened after attempts to secure financial support from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation also proved unsuccessful.

This development has left the team in limbo, despite their historic qualification under Swiss coach Nora Hauptle earlier this year.

For many of the players and technical staff, this was expected to be a new dawn; a return to the continental stage after missing out on the previous edition.

Traditionally, the GFA is responsible for funding the national teams, covering per diems, travel, and logistical costs, while coaches’ salaries are paid using funds from FIFA, CAF, and other sponsorships.

The GFA has previously stated on record that it paid Coach Nora Hauptle’s salary through such channels.

However, the current financial standoff raises serious questions about planning, priorities, and the consistent neglect of women’s football in Ghana, even as the team prepares to represent the nation on a continental stage.

As it stands, the Black Queens’ WAFCON dreams hang in the balance, not due to form or fitness, but a lack of basic financial support.

For now, the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have yet to respond.

Ghana plays Mali, Reigning Champions South Africa and Tanzania, with the Black Queens playing South Africa on July 7.
