Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has clarified that he never supported calls for Otto Addo’s dismissal after the team’s failure to qualify for the AFCON in Morocco.
Ghana’s disappointing campaign saw them finish bottom of Group F without a single win, marking one of the Black Stars’ worst performances in two decades and sparking widespread frustration among fans, many of whom demanded Addo’s sacking.
In stark contrast, Otto Addo has excelled in his second stint as coach, leading the Black Stars to the top of their group in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with an impressive 15 points.
This success follows his earlier tenure, during which he guided Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, though the team exited in the group stage.
“I didn’t encourage the sacking of Otto Addo after the AFCON qualification failure, it sometimes gets too much for the players with hiring & sacking of coaches” – C.K. Akonnor
