Wreaths from the Ghana Olympic Commitee

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) today, August 11, 2025, laid a wreath in honour of the eight Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives in last week’s helicopter crash during a government anti-galamsey mission.

The moving ceremony formed part of the nation’s ongoing tributes to the victims, underscoring the respect and gratitude for their service to Ghana.

On August 6, an Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter went down on a forested slope in the Adansi-Akrofuom district of the Ashanti Region, killing all on board. The victims included;

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence

  • Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment

  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

President John Dramani Mahama declared three days of national mourning from August 7 to 9, with flags flown at half-mast and official engagements suspended. A state funeral for the victims will be held at Black Star Square on August 15.

The GOC’s wreath-laying is one of several tributes organised by institutions across the country. At a military reception earlier this week, pallbearers from the Ghana Armed Forces carried flag-draped caskets in a solemn procession led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah

A board of enquiry has begun investigations into the cause of the crash. Both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered for analysis.
