Sunderland marked their Premier League return with a statement 3-0 win over West Ham United at the Stadium of Light, thanks to goals from Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard, and Wilson Isidor.

The first half was cagey, with both sides creating half chances. Robin Roefs denied Jarrod Bowen early, while Sunderland’s Dan Ballard came closest when his header was saved by Mads Hermansen. The half ended goalless, but the Black Cats grew in confidence after the break.

Eliezer Mayenda broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, rising highest to nod home Omar Alderete’s cross. The home fans erupted again 12 minutes later when Northern Ireland Dan Ballard doubled Sunderland’s lead with another powerful header from a corner.

West Ham, despite throwing on Callum Wilson and Tomáš Soucek, could not find a way through Sunderland’s organised defence. Jarrod Bowen saw multiple efforts blocked, and Roefs produced key saves to frustrate the visitors.

As the Hammers pushed forward in stoppage time, Sunderland sealed the points on the counter. Chemsdine Talbi set up Wilson Isidor, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner for 3-0, sparking wild celebrations in the North East.

It was a dream start for Sunderland, who not only returned to the top flight in style but also showed resilience and sharpness in front of goal.

For West Ham, it was a sobering evening, leaving Graham Potter  plenty to think about as they regroup for their next outing.
