For the first time since winning the Australian Open in 2021, Japan tennis player Naomi Osaka has qualified to compete in the last eight of a tennis major.

Osaka delivered a strong performance to get past former US Open champion Coco Gauff to progress from the fourth round via a 6-3, 6-2 win. Osaka is set to face Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, September 3 at 23:00 GMT.

By making it to the quarterfinals, Osaka gets closer to a third US Open title in her career and described the US Open surface as her favourite stating,

“I’m a little sensitive, I don’t want to cry – I had so much fun out here. I was in the stands two months after giving birth to my daughter watching Coco and I really wanted an opportunity to come out and play.”

“It’s my favourite court in the world and it means so much to be back out here” Osaka according to the BBC.

Since winning this year’s French Open title, Coco Gauff has struggled in the majors; she lost in the first round at Wimbledon.
