World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has expressed concern for athletes set to compete in this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan over high temperatures in the Asian city.

Top athletes including eight from Ghana will gather in Tokyo to compete in multiple disciplines in the competition that runs from September 13 to September 21.

Team Ghana will be led by national record 100 metre holder Abdul-Rasheed Saminu and former national record holder Benjamin Azamati and national high jump record holder Rose Amoaniwaa Yeboah. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

However, Tokyo has been dealing with a longer than usual heatwave that has been recorded as the hottest in its history since records were tracked beginning in 1898.

The temperature on the opening day of the championships is expected to reach 32 degrees Celsius and this has Sebastian Coe concerned.

“I don’t think it’s any great secret, we do have some heat challenges in Tokyo. We had them actually at the time of the Games in 2021” he said as quoted by the BBC.
