Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso says his team’s loss to city rivals Atletico Madrid is one that hurts and added that his team lacked a gear in the contest.
He said this after Real Madrid lost 5-2 to Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano with Julian Alvarez scoring twice including a brilliant free kick for Atletico.
The loss is the first for Xabi Alonso in the league this season since taking over from Carlo Ancelotti; Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal picked up an injury to his right leg and is set to be out for three to four weeks.
After seeing his team go up 2-1 thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler, Alonso was disappointed his team ended up conceding four straight goals in the big loss.
“It was a bad game. We didn’t play well collectively, with or without the ball. There are no excuses. We were lacking a gear. This defeat hurts. We weren’t fluid with the ball.

“We weren’t able to win the ball in their half. We couldn’t impose ourselves in the duels…We won’t forget this tough defeat, it hurts us” Alonso said.
